I've watched about a dozen founders lose a deal to a cheaper competitor this year, and every single one of them blamed price. None of them were right.
Two versions of the same offer, and I keep seeing the wrong one win:
→ Lineup version: "We do what they do, just better and more personal."
→ Only version: "We're the only ones who finish this in 30 days."
The lineup version drops you in a row with everyone else and asks the buyer to pay more for "better." You've just made yourself the expensive copy of an existing thing.
The only version removes the comparison before it can start. Nobody's pricing you against anyone, because there's no one to price you against.
The part nobody wants to say out loud - the cheaper competitor was never the problem. Price is a comfortable villain. It lets the positioning stay exactly as it is and lets you go home feeling robbed instead of exposed.
And here's the tell. Every founder I've watched blame price went and cut it. Most of them are still cutting. The one who reworked the offer instead was booked solid within a month.
Price never lost the deal.
The lineup did.
