A tiny handoff created more work than the task it was meant to remove

In brief
A tiny handoff created more work than the task it was meant to remove. That’s the part of delegation nobody puts in the cheerful little “scale your team” graphic - the short-term move can feel smart while making the whole system heavier.

That’s the part of delegation nobody puts in the cheerful little “scale your team” graphic - the short-term move can feel smart while making the whole system heavier.
1. Before - hand off the task.
After - hand off the result.
“Can you make these updates?” gives someone activity. “Can you get this client approved by Friday?” gives them a finish line.
2. Before - explain every step.
After - explain the standard.
If they need your play-by-play to do the work, you didn’t really create leverage. You created a second version of yourself with worse context.
3. Before - check constantly.
After - set one decision point.
A quick review halfway through is usually more useful than seven little interruptions that make everyone feel busy and nobody feel clear.
4. Before - fix the visible mistake.
After - fix the missing instruction upstream.
The mistake is often just the symptom. The real issue is that the person had to guess what “good” meant - and guessing is a surprisingly expensive operating system.
5. Before - reward speed.
After - reward clean handoffs.
Getting something off your plate today feels great. Getting it off your plate without creating a new plate tomorrow is the actual win.
6. Before - keep the work in your head.
After - leave behind the two or three things you’d otherwise have to explain again.
That small shift is usually enough to turn delegation from “please don’t make me regret this” into something that gives the team room to move 🙂
The goal isn’t more people touching the work. It’s fewer decisions needing to come back to you - and that’s where the leverage starts.
